Disquera: Low Country Sound/Elektra
He comes from Alabama, lives in Nashville and dates (and works with) Miranda Lambert, but Anderson East isn’t what you’d call country, unless country’s now going through its post-Van Morrison phase. Most songs on his fourth album are propelled by organ, occasionally with soul-chorus backup (“If You Keep Leaving Me,” “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces”) or sax solos (“House is a Building.”) The striving for deep meaning turns raunchier halfway through, slavering over your significant other atop Ides of March/early Chicago/Lighthouse horns and chords in “Girlfriend” then growling like mid-career John Hiatt in “Surrender” and adult alternative smash “All On My Mind.” By “Cabinet Door” at album’s end, lyrics finally get specific – conjuring a lonely widower who’d raised seven kids in 52 years.
