Girls in Peacetime Want to Dance
"Be popular, play pop, and you will win my love," Stuart Murdoch is promised by "The Everlasting Muse." In that cause, Belle and Sebastian's ninth and brashest album aims to bring their arch rhymes and wistful vignettes to the dancefloor: Try the shimmering, elongated groove of "Enter Sylvia Plath" and "Play for Today," or the percolating electro-pop of "The Party Line." But the song with the best chance to win Murdoch's muse is the three-minute psychoanalytic session "Allie": a tough-love pep talk that's simultaneously harsh, generous and blissfully poppy.
