This is Enslaved's first full-length, recorded and released in 1994, when founders Ivar Bjornson and Grutle Kjellson were still teenagers. Predating their Viking metal years, the album displays a proclivity for the expansive structures and classical touches that would inform their music later on, if at a much higher tempo. With lyrics translated into Icelandic and dedicated to Euronymous, who had been murdered the year before, Vikingligr Veldi bears a Norwegian black metal legitimacy that is tough to equal. Four of the five tracks are more than 10 minutes long.
