First, nothing here is as catchy as "Pumped Up Kicks," "Houdini" or "Helena Beat," and the synths and disco sounds have been dialed down. But Supermodel is a better album than Torches, partly because they aren't just throwing any sound at the wall that sticks. The leisurely atmosphere doesn't disguise a lack of propulsion -- Foster the People have expert chord changes and they know how to use them. There's a genuine, capital-R riff on "Are You What You Want to Be?," while the dreamy "Ask Yourself" has more thorns in its acoustic-and-handclap arrangement than its sweet chorus would suggest.
