The Los Angeles saxophonist appeared on albums by Kendrick Lamar and Snoop Dogg after co-leading a jazz ensemble recording back in 2004, though this three-hour event still feels like his real debut. What we've got here is truth in titling: Washington's band includes strings, a chorus, and two bass players (one of whom is Thundercat). But the real star is Washington, who sounds distinct even when gesturing to past giants (as when he touches on Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders during "Change of the Guard," or when he takes cues from Miles Davis' funkier ensembles during "Re Run Home").
