The Buffet (Deluxe Version)
“Come put your body on a dinner plate,” R. Kelly sings on “Poetic Sex.” This will sound like a disturbing invitation for listeners who are increasingly vocal about allegations Kelly has committed sexual misconduct. Initially, he seems to taunt his critics, “Every time we’re in the bedroom, it be sounding like a marching band,” and Juicy J chimes in, celebrating a “million thot march.” Then, Kelly abruptly tones down the raunch. “Wanna Be There” is a tender duet with his daughter Ariiraye, and “All My Fault” is reminiscent of his classic soul throwback Write Me Back. On “Backyard Party,” he tries to score another barbecue jam classic like “Step in the Name of Love.” The album’s chaotic flow suggests that Kelly might not know what he wants The Buffet to be. Given the serious accusations against him, neither do we.
