When Paul McCartney shouts “1, 2, 3, 4” at the beginning of the album’s opening track, “I Saw Her Standing There,” you feel the excitement of a group making their debut album, turning their dreams into reality.

On February 11, 1963, in EMI’s north London studios, The Beatles recorded the 10 tracks needed to complete their debut album, Please Please Me. The album also included four songs from two singles they recorded in 1962: “Love Me Do”/“P.S. I Love You” and “Please Please Me”/“Ask Me Why.” John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison had been playing together for five years, and after hundreds of gigs at The Cavern Club in Liverpool and all-night sessions at clubs in Hamburg, West Germany, they, along with recent recruit Ringo Starr, were ready for the challenge of this marathon recording session.

In addition to the Lennon/McCartney songs that had already been released, four more originals were recorded. One of them, “Do You Want to Know a Secret,” was covered by Billy J. Kramer and The Dakotas and hit No. 1. (George Harrison takes the lead on The Beatles’ version.) The group also covered six rhythm and blues songs, none of which had been a British Top 40 hit. The final track the group recorded on that very productive day was their rocking reinvention of the Isley Brothers’ hit “Twist And Shout.” The LP track became as well-known in 1963 as any of their singles.

Please Please Me was released March 22, 1963. The pop music market was in its infancy. Young fans bought affordable singles; expensive albums were aimed at adults. But The Beatles soon changed all that. Please Please Me topped the U.K. chart for 30 weeks until it was replaced by the group’s next album. Paul’s count-in launched a musical revolution that reverberates to this day.
